Thomas Hardy and Sir Edward Elgar – Curating Lives by James Grasby, Curator, National Trust

If genius is the ability to bequeath an impressive and influential body of work to future generations, both Thomas Hardy and Edward Elgar qualify. However their genius came about, it started at their birthplaces, both now in the care of the National Trust. How can we account for the sudden appearance of such dazzling, original and unique gifts in children born to unexceptional parents.  What genes, parenting, home life, environmental circumstances, and so on produced these exceptionally creative people? James Grasby discusses what might have been the ingredients and circumstances that fuelled and inspired them, how the National Trust goes about curating famous lives, and gives a preview of Elgar’s Birthplace due open to visitors in September 2017.

The talk will be introduced by Dorset Archives Trust Patron Kate Adie

Tickets: £15.00 (incl. strawberries and cream and a glass of fizz with musical accompaniment  by members of the Wessex Youth Orchestra)
