Traditional Dorset Flower Names

go back

Do you know any traditional Dorset flower names or even better do you know how they came by them?

One of our Trustees across this list she had photocopied last time she was able to go to the Archives - it is a list of Dorset flower names - some were familiar to her like Grannies Bonnets and Queen Anne's Lace but most were quite new.

'Kiss me John at the Garden Gate' is a good name but it's probably much easier to say pansy! Cuckoo Pint is also known 'Lords and Ladies' but there were a couple of different names for this 'devils and angels' and 'parson in the pulpit'. What elder did to deserve being called 'God's stinking tree'!

If you have any ideas leave us a message on our fb page or send us an email.
