Unlocking Thomas Hardy – Julian Fellowes

"The Hardy Archive on deposit at the Dorset History Centre is the biggest and most important collection of material by and about Thomas Hardy in the world. It is a treasure trove of 150 boxes containing thousands of items, books, diaries, notes, paintings, even his mother's kettle.  So many of his thoughts and his beliefs are made clear by this archive, and having access to it is vital to any research into the life and work of the great Dorset author.  At present, however, there is no catalogue to make the collection fully and helpfully accessible to researchers and enquirers, when it should be available to everyone, worldwide, via the internet.  In short, it is vital that such a catalogue be created.  To achieve this, we need the financial support of all those who are interested in and love the writings of Hardy.  I am therefore fully and enthusiastically in support of the History Centre’s project, Unlocking Thomas Hardy which aims to raise £60,000 to make this wonderful collection accessible to everyone, for the very first time."
