Volunteer Profile
We thought it would be nice to find out a bit more about the people who volunteer with DAT/DHC.
Name: Anne
Why do you volunteer with DAT/DHC? I had just completed a Masters (in Garden History) and so much enjoyed the research element of it and wanted to continue in some form or other my link with the History Centre and to learn more about the archives that are held and the general running of the History Centre.
What do you love about archives? It is the gems of information that are revealed by the most ordinary of records and often or not not in the obvious places. That is a real eureka moment! It is like a massive jigsaw that can take years (if ever) to complete and the chase for the information is just as much fun as finding the actual information you are seeking.
Favourite historical person? Mine would have to be the many Victorian plant hunters (if I am , allowed a whole group) primarily English and European. They suffered hardship, disease, war and injury to travel to new countries to discover plants and trees that we have in our gardens today and take very much for granted. Without their determination our gardens would be somewhat depleted of colour, shape and form.
