Yours Respectfully – the Life and Letters of an Edwardian Nanny

go back

The ups and downs of the life of a live-in servant; a talk by Valerie Brenton, genealogist & Dorset History Centre volunteer

Thursday 16 November 2023, 7.00pm via Zoom   Tickets: £6.00 (members £5.00)

Valerie Brenton has gained a fascinating insight into the world of an Edwardian servant. Maude Dudley was nanny to the Williams family of Bridehead in the Bride Valley for much of her life. Valerie will introduce us to a unique collection of letters written by Maude in the early 20th century.

Using Maude’s own words, Valerie will reveal the detail of the daily activities and huge responsibilities entrusted to a nanny, painting a picture of the ups and downs of working life as a live in servant. Valerie will also outline where you might find records for servants and their employers.

To book tickets for the event please visit eventbrite.

The Zoom link will be emailed to ticket holders on the day of the talk
